Luiss student Matilde Napoli is currently enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and chose the University for its international atmosphere: “I spend a year abroad during high school and I wanted to continue studying in a foreign language. Luiss is one of the few universities to offer degree programs entirely in English.”
Matilde is an active volunteer for Comunità di Sant’Egidio, working to prepare and distribute meals for the homeless. “With time, they become real friends. With them, you develop a relationship based not only on solidarity but on genuine affection,” Matilde says. The biggest challenge right now is the lack of physical contact. “It may seem trivial, but even a hug helps us communicate that we are there for them.”
In a period where restrictions are particularly strict, there are far less associations willing to help. “We, however, have intensified our service, going to the center at least three days a week. We’ve got masks, gloves, and we maintain the recommended distance. It’s not easy, but its more essential than ever in this period,” the student explains.
“If it weren’t for the University’s links with the world of volunteering, I would have never known about this project. Now, it’s become a fundamental part of my life. In the competitive world that we live in, volunteering helps us keep our feet on the ground.” Matilde recommends that all students seek out similar experiences because “it is one of those things that can change your life. It opens your eyes and helps you better understand the world around you.”
In the future, Matilde would like to specialize in European institutions to one day work within them: “I definitely won’t abandon the Comunità di Sant’Egidio, and I’ll keep working with them as long as I can.”
