Phishing is a method used to trick users into revealing personal or financial information via email or through a website. A common trick is to send an email similar to official communication from a trustworthy source, such as a bank, a credit card company or an online retailer with an established reputation. Recipients of the email are directed to a fraudulent website where they are then asked to submit personal information, such as a bank account number or a password. This information is then used to steal the user’s identity.
If you receive a suspicious email, keep in mind:
- Luiss University never requests personal information via email
- Be cautious in managing your email and credentials used to access any of the University’s services
- Do not click on links in emails similar in subject or content to those aforementioned.
- Do not fill out any forms online that request usernames or passwords that you reach through links in suspicious emails
- Never respond to these types of emails
How to defend yourself
Over the years, and with the increasing use of phishing, email providers and software houses that develop client emails have developed spam and phishing filters that protect their users. These systems, however, are not perfect, and sometimes fraudulent emails make it to user’s inboxes. Pay very close attention and please send a copy of the message to Luiss IT Services via the ticket system.
