Tutored

"It’s a simple idea that resolves a problem that we ourselves have encountered: finding students to give lessons to, or, on the other hand, finding a tutor to help us study." Tutored is a startup from the LUISS EnLabs accelerator, an idea that three young students came up with, to have supply meet demand for help studying for university exams.

Having gone through InnovAction Lab, the non-profit association that promotes entrepreneurial training programs for young people, the idea of finding the perfect tutor got initial financing of sixty thousand Euros from the LVenture Group and Club Italia Investimenti 2. It then entered into the LUISS startup factory, from which it launched its official platform a few weeks ago.

Nicolò Bardi, one of the three founders (the other two are Gabriele Giugliano and Martina Mattone), is a LUISS student in his second year of Economics and Management and the financial director of the group. "Just this week I found myself preparing for the accounting and budgeting exam with Professor Salvatore Sarcone while drafting the budget and financial plan for Tutored,” he tells us. “It was really exciting to be studying something and then be able to apply it at the same time, even if it’s quite tiring!"

A new entrant into the world of entrepreneurship and startups, thanks to the LUISS i-lab, Nicolò realized he had a winning idea when Tutored, without even having an active site and relying only on a Facebook group, was already able to invoice five hundred Euros. It was precisely this successful launch strategy, referred to in web marketing as a “minimum viable product,” that convinced EnLabs to invest in the three students. "One of the best things about LUISS EnLabs is without a doubt its dynamic and stimulating environment. Whatever problems or concerns arise, there are other startups ready to give you a hand and to tell you about their experience. Here we have learned an efficient way of working that is based on detailed planning and prompt, flawless implementation. Having a number of deadlines, we had to adapt to the frenetic pace of work of a startup and we have learned to relate to investors and important managers such as the country manager of Spotify and that of AirBnB."

With a platform based on tutors’ personal profiles and the support of a blog catering to student issues, the Tutored community can already count over fifty thousand registered students. "There exist a number of sites that are similar to ours where the tutor is just an ad: on Tutored, however, the tutor is an actual person. Tutors on our platform are students who, aside from putting their university experiences, can enter their university, faculty, a personal description and, above all, the professor they did the exam with. It is these last elements that have convinced many students to reserve their older classmates for a study session."

Built by young entrepreneurs who talk about a target market made up of other young students or new graduates, the students of Tutored have grasped the importance of dealing with the life, doubts and problems of the world of university. "Our communication strategy is based on an online and offline marketing strategy. With regard to the first, we use Facebook announcements to direct marketing campaigns towards a specific target market. For the offline strategy, on the other hand, we participate in university events (such as the LUISS Welcome Day) and we tell our stories at the university during classes or at other special occasions. We also do a lot of unconventional marketing: we are planning a number of contests and a surprise for Christmas!"
